Pool tile guide Calcium on glass tile.

Glass and iridescent mosaics look great until calcium hazes them over. They can be cleaned safely, but not with the same approach as ceramic.

Glass tile restoration by Elite Outdoor Services

Why glass is different

Glass tile is harder than glazed ceramic in some ways and more delicate in others: its surface shows scratches and haze easily, and iridescent finishes are thin. That's why it needs a media chosen for glass.

The media we use on glass

On glass tile we use a mineral-based media that is pH-neutral. Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone get silica bead. We start with a test spot and adjust pressure to the tile. More on the process: pool tile cleaning and calcium removal.

What not to do

Don't use wire brushes, pumice or acid tile cleaners on glass tile. They can scratch or dull the surface permanently, and scratched glass collects calcium faster.

Keeping glass tile clear

Brush weekly with a soft nylon brush, keep the water level steady and the chemistry balanced. Glass tile on raised spa walls and spillovers needs the same attention, since splashing builds scale fastest there.

Questions

Good to know

Can calcium be removed from iridescent glass tile?

Yes. We use a mineral-based, pH-neutral media chosen for glass and test a spot first.

Is silica bead used on glass tile?

No. Silica bead is used on porcelain, ceramic and natural stone.

Do you drain the pool to clean glass tile?

No. The water is lowered about 6 to 12 inches below the tile line, and the pool is never drained.
